HOW TO HOST WEEKEND GUESTS

By Gigi Levangie Grazer

Grazer, a screenwriter (Stepmom) and novelist (Maneater, Simon & Shuster), lives in Pacific Palisades, California.

Before you invite guests for the weekend, be certain that you actually want to have them. You're giving up your privacy, so only ask if you really mean it. Once that's settled, just relax -- I think of the experience as an extended date.

* Check in. Be up-front with guests about when they should arrive. If you need an excuse, say something like, "The house is being tented for termites on Friday," which is common in Los Angeles and ensures no one will show up too early. Or invoke another, incompatible guest. "My mother-in-law will be in town all week," keeps friends from turning up before Saturday.

* Prepare the three C's. Comfort, cleanliness, and chocolate. In the guest room or guest-designated part of the living room, it's time to whip out the high-thread-count sheets, the cashmere throw, and that special down pillow. Put a fun best-seller and gourmet chocolates on the nightstand. Make the room so comfortable that you would actually want to sleep there, too. And if your guest is a man, leave condoms on the side table. He'll thank you.
