Pittsburgh - Coal-to-liquids (CTL) plants would emit less carbon dioxide (CO2) than oil refineries if a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) scheme were employed, according to a study by researchers at Mitretek and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In the study, presented to 22nd International Pittsburgh Coal Conference here, a notional CTL plant producing 33,200 barrels/day of fuels and 696 megawatts of power was compared to an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant producing the same amount of power, alongside an oil refinery producing the same number of barrels/day of fuels.
