San Francisco - Aiming to head-off potential fuel supply problems that could threaten national defense, a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) "Total Energy Development" (TED) project could spur the birth of a U.S. coal-to-liquids (CTL) Fischer-Tropsch fuels business. Eventually, the scheme could total some 1 million barrels/day of fuels. As TED program director Ted Sheridan explained to the Gasification Technologies Council annual conference here, DoD foresees the possibility of CTL meeting the Pentagon's need for 300,000 barrels/day of synthetic jet fuel plus another 100,000 barrels/day of diesel fuel, for DoD's aircraft, vessels and ground equipment. Beyond its own needs, DoD also is working with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on a "fuel purchasing block" scheme with various U.S. states that eventually could total 1 million barrels/day of CTL...
