The Tokyo metropolitan government plans to spend 1 billion yen to help all public elementary schools in the capital set up security cameras by the end of March 2007, sources said.

The budget will cover half of the costs of the monitoring system, which will provide each school with four to six cameras, enabling school officials to watch for suspicious characters from the faculty room or other places

Of the 1,331 public elementary schools in Tokyo, 387, or about 29 percent, will have the cameras installed by the end of March next year, the sources said. The cameras will be in place at the remaining schools before fiscal 2008
