Lip Balm Backlash
L
ip balms that contain salicylic acid may do more harm than good to chapped lips. Salicylic acid, an exfoliant in many cleansers and lotions, is added to some lip balms to help other ingredients permeate the skin. When applied to chapped lips, though, it may slough off surface tissue and damage the healthy underlying layers, making the problem worse, according to a report in US Pharmacist by W. Steven Pray of Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. (Other potential irritants include isopropyl myristate, eugenol, and phenol.) To prevent chapping, the report recommends lip balms that contain FDA-approved protectants such as petrolatum, glycerin, allantoin, mineral oil, lanolin, dimethicone, cocoa butter, or cod-liver oil. To treat itching or otherwise irritated lips, Pray suggests applying .25 percent to 1 percent hydrocortisone. He also says that sufferers should avoid licking their lips.
