Marijuana

Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug. It is a psychoactive (mind-altering) drug, derived from the plant Cannabis sativa, or hemp, which is grown wild and cultivated in many areas of the world. Marijuana can be put in foods and eaten, but generally it is smoked in cigarettes, or joints," which are made up of the dried leaves, flowers, and small stems of the plant. The active ingredient in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC); an average cigarette may contain up to 6 percent THC, a substantial rise from the 0.4 percent average content of cigarettes in the early 1970s.
