he battle lines are drawn. Itis plain vs. pretty. Fat vs. thin. Lifted vs. natural. Us vs. them. When the issue turns to the politics of appearance, thereis precious little middle ground left. This year, for example, the fat wars continued to rage in a realm of extremes, with one side suggesting that Americans are slowly poisoning themselves with food, that we are on a collision course with a death star shaped like a giant Cheez Doodle, and the other side asserting that if we are getting fatter (if?!), it is our right as free citizens to do so, and, by the way, the founding fathers ate like hogs.
