Florida State's return to dominance. The `Noles can't rush the passer, can't cover in the secondary and can't keep quarterback Chris Rix from making game-turning mistakes, It's still early, but the meat of the ACC schedule looms--as do Miami and Florida.

Virginia Tech. The Hokies are unbeaten and have the best backfield In the country. So what? Once sophomore quarterback Bryan Randall proves he can make game-turning plays--he will need to at some point this season--we'll believe.

East Carolina. A soft early schedule was supposed to help new quarterback Paul Troth, but the Pirates have lost to--ahem--Duke, Wake Forest and West Virginia and nearly fell to Tulane. Troth, meanwhile, has thrown three touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Central Florida. A tough schedule hasn't helped things, but the Knights have struggled in the second half of games. They could have picked up two program-defining wins if things hadn't dissolved late in losses to Penn State and Marshall.
