The senior quarterback class is improving as the college season goes on because several unproven players appear to be coming of age. The highest-rated prospects:
1. Byron Leftwich, 6-6, 240, Marshall. Has been compared with Daunte Culpepper, but is more of a pocket passer. Big and thick. Gets the ball downfield very well. Throws into coverage at times. Probably isn't an ideal fit for a West Coast scheme.
2. Carson Painter, 6-6, 225, Southern California. Continues to make strides that could enhance his draft stock. Is very talented. Has a strung arm, and can throw with anticipation and touch. Has lapsed into poor decision-making in the past.
3. Chris Simms, 6-6, 226, Texas. A pocket passer with a good arm and mechanics. Has developed into a leader. Has stepped up this season but needs to prove to NFL scouts that he can make big plays and win big games.
4. Dave Ragone, 6-4, 286, Louisville. A big, talented, tough lefthander who gets little support from his teammates. Has surprising mobility for his size. Can make all the throws but could be more consistent with his accuracy. Has great intangibles.
5. Kyle Boller, 6-2, 206, California. Is blossoming under new coach Jeff Tedford. Has a nice combination of arm strength and mobility. Is athletic for his size. Must continue to make good decisions.
6. Ken Dorsey, 6-5,, 200, Miami, A highly productive pocket passer on a great team. An intelligent player who minimizes errors. Arm strength and accuracy aren't great. Might be able to add some weight and strength.
