It is another day in paradise for referee Mike Carey and his crew.

They officiate a sloppy, plodding game between the Texans and Chargers that includes 16 penalties, three instant-replay challenges and two near-safeties. Chargers fans scream at line judge Walt Anderson, "You're blind" and he laughs. Linebacker Junior Seau complains he is being held, and umpire Garth DeFelice pats him on the rump. Coach Marty Schottenheimer goes apoplectic over a penalty call, and Carey patiently lets him erupt, knowing he'll eventually accept the ruling.

"God, you have to love it," DeFelice says. So what if they had been booed incessantly and had their character ...
