OFFSEASON PRIORITIES: Getting RHP Aaron Sele back up to speed is a top priority. Sele struggled to get through the season because of shoulder trouble and won only eight games before spending the final six weeks on the D.L. Before joining the Angels last December, Sele won at least 13 games for five consecutive seasons.... The club could use more left-handed relief help. Scott Schoeneweis has adapted well as a lefthanded specialist but still wants to be a starter. Dennis Cook is expected to retire, and there's not much in the minor leagues. The bullpen has been one of the best in the league this season but at times has lacked balance.... A full-time, power-hitting DH would fit perfectly with the way the lineup currently sets up. Brad Fullmer and Shown Wooten have been adequate offensively, but if the club could add a 30-homer, 100-RBI producer who can hit righthanders and lefthanders equally well, the lineup could become one of the most feared in the league.
COMINGS AND GOINGS: Fullmer has given the Angels much more production from the DH spot than they had in 2001, but the club will have to determine whether his $4 million salary this season was worth it. He's eligible for arbitration, and the club might opt for a cheaper alternative, such as Wooten, who has platooned with Fullmer at the DH spot since returning in July from thumb and rib cage injuries.... RHP Al Levine was RHP Troy Percival's top setup man in 2000 and 2001, but he was slowed by shoulder fatigue in 2002 and has watched other middle relievers in the organization, including RHPs Brendan Donnelly and Scot Shields, emerge.... Because the team is rich in pitching, it might might consider trading Schoeneweis if the right deal came along. ... Benji Gil has been productive as a utility infielder, but he could be moved to make room for some talented youngsters in minors.--Joe Haakenson
GRADING 2002
OFFENSE: B+ They led the league in average and were unselfish at the plate.
