Baseball awards always produce lively debates, and several of this year's races are especially heated. After considerable thought--and a few coin flips--TSN Insider Ken Rosenthal weighed in with his choices.
A.L. MVP: Miguel Tejada, SS, A's. Alex Rodriguez struggled at the plate for the last-place Rangers in September while Tejada repeatedly came up big over the final two months in the middle of a pennant race. Tejada was outstanding after moving to Jason Giambi's former No. 3 spot in late May and markedly improved his defense at shortstop. Yankees second baseman Alfonso Soriano isn't strong enough defensively to get the nod.
N.L. MVP: Barry Bonds, LF, Giants. He won a batting title at 38, finished with nearly as many homers (46) as strikeouts (47) and set records for on-base percentage, walks and intentional walks. No player influences a game more.
A.L. Cy Young: Pedro Martinez, RHP, Red Sox. His first three starts were rocky as he fought back from shoulder trouble, but after that he posted a 1.80 ERA, finishing at 2.26 to Derek Lowe's 2.58 and ...
