In 5x5-category leagues, the value of a save can't be understated, especially in A.L.- or N.L.-only leagues. There are only a handful of dependable closers, and you're lucky if you have even one of them. So you should always be on the lookout for players who can weasel into a save situation, even if it's a spot save or two. Here are a few of those potential weasels:
Francisco Cordero, Rangers. Injuries have forced Cordero to the forefront. He has been there successfully before--for about a week before a pulled muscle in his shoulder sidelined him.
Damaso Marie, White Sox. We thought Marte was the Sox's closer of the future and Foulke the closer of the present. We still do. Antonio Osuna?
Cliff Politte Blue Jays. A journeyman, Politte surprisingly is popping the mitt in the mid- to high 90s and could be the Jays' closer by season's end if a trade or ineffectiveness dooms Kelvim Escobar.
Ricardo Rincon, Indians. The bullpen, once a strength, has few closer candidates after Bob Wickman's injury and Paul Shuey's departure. Rincon is the best of the lot.
