ONE-PITCH WONDER: LHP Scott Schoeneweis, removed from the rotation in late June in favor of RHP John Lackey, worked all spring to add a changeup to his repertoire. But he rarely uses it, sticking with his hard sinker, his best pitch. When pitching out of the bullpen, Schoeneweis is more willing to stick with one pitch because hitters don't see enough of his pitches to get their timing right. It's working--he has allowed one run and one hit in his last six appearances. He still would like to start, but for now the team likes the way he is throwing and plans to keep him in the bullpen for the rest of the season, barring an an injury to a starter.... DH Brad Fullmer went without a home run in July. But he hit two in the first three games of August, showing signs he is becoming more comfortable at the plate.... The team added depth when it acquired OF Alex Ochoa in a trade with the Brewers. Before the trade, the team only had one reserve outfielder, Orlando Palmeiro, and no outfielder in the minors ready for the big leagues. Ochoa, 30, is an experienced outfielder who is solid offensively and defensively coming off the bench.

SCOUTING REPORT: RHP Ben Weber, who played nine years of professional baseball before reaching the big leagues in 2000, has become the clubs top setup man. Weber can throw the ball in the low 90s but isn't looking to overpower hitters. He aims to get hitters to hit the ball on the ground and has pitched his way out of tough situations, getting key double-play bails. While closer Troy Percival was on the D.L. in mid-July, Weber converted all four of his save opportunities.--Joe Haakenson

TSNumber 1

Errors committed by CF Darin Erstad since the beginning of the 2001 season. No other major league outfielder with at least 700 chances has made as few as one error during that span. Erstad has not made an error this season.
