76-52 2nd in West

HELP FROM BELOW: With RHP Aaron Sele (shoulder) going on the D.L., the team replaced him in the rotation with RHP Mickey Calloway, who was called up from Class AAA Salt Lake. Calloway, acquired in the off-season in a minor league deal with Tampa Bay, was 9-2 with a 1.68 ERA. He has good control, walking only 22 in 91 1/3 innings.... LHP Scott Schoeneweis started 15 games before RHP John Lackey took his spot in the rotation, but the team doesn't want to disrupt its bullpen, especially because Schoeneweis is the only lefty. Left-handed batters are hitting just .214 against him. As a reliever, Schoeneweis throws his sinking fastball almost exclusively. He needed more pitcher as a starter. ... DH/1B Shawn Wooten is in the big leagues because of his hitting and his defensive versatility. He can play first or third, and he is the club's third-string catcher. Offensively, Wooten's strength is his simple approach: He looks for pitches in a particular location. Wooten doesn't hit a lot of home runs, but he has good power to the gaps.

PROBABLE CALL-UPS: 2B Chone Figgins leads the Pacific Coast League in triples (18) and stolen bases (39). He got his call-up early, joining the team last week when RF Tim Salmon went on the disabled list. His primary role will be as a pinch runner. RHP Lou Pote spent most of the season as the long man with the Angels before being sent to Class AAA Salt Lake late last month. He's a starter now, but he likely will return to long relief when he returns. IF Jose Nieves could return as a late-inning replacement in the middle infield.--Joe Haakenson

AUGUST GRADES

OFFENSE: The club is hitting about .300 in August after hitting just .264 in July.
