Choice voice `August 30, 2002, would have been Ted Williams' 84th birthday. How appropriate to disgrace the memory of a legend from the days when baseball was a game.'--Tedy Dewey, Portsmouth, N.H.
Cruel and unusual punishment
I know baseball has done wrong, but what did the owners do that God cursed them with a (so-called) leader such as Bud Selig (TSN, August 26)? Have they really been that bad? And why did God tell the players to follow an egocentric idiot such as Don Fehr? And why do we, the fans, have to pay the price? What have we done wrong?

Looking for closure
When the 1994 strike wiped out the end of the season, we still got batting and pitching leaders--but no pennant winners. Why not award the pennants to the Expos and the Yankees, who had the best records in their leagues? That system worked from 1901 to 1968 without need for playoffs.
If there is a strike this year, let's do the same. In fact, with interleague play mixing the two leagues, one could even argue that the team with the best record should be world champs. Just give us some closure on the season--strike or not.
