Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville warned John Lovett not to take the job. But Lovett didn't listen.
"When we got here (from Mississippi), I was looking for a defensive coordinator," Tuberville says. "At the time, John was my secondary coach. I asked him if he wanted the job, and he said he would love it. I said, `Let's talk about this. If we have any problems or setbacks, your position will be the first one to go. And I'd rather you stay at secondary coach where you don't have as much pressure on you.' But he wanted to try it. He did a good job."
