HARRISBURG, Pa. -- HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- On behalf of Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker, Education Secretary Charles B. Zogby today released a comprehensive five-year study that shows Pennsylvania's charter schools have demonstrated a solid record of academic performance, a high level of parent satisfaction, and that Pennsylvania has built a solid foundation for the future of charter schools.
The entire report and an executive summary are available through the PA PowerPort at http://www.state.pa.us/, PA Keyword: "Charter Schools."
"From Day One of this Administration, we made it a priority to empower parents and provide choices for making the best decisions about their children's education," Secretary Zogby said. "And now, five years, 91 schools and 32,000 children later, this study tells us what we have known for years -- charter education is working in Pennsylvania."
Secretary Zogby today also announced $747,300 in charter-school planning grants for 30 groups seeking to establish charter public schools in their communities.
The study, required under Pennsylvania's Charter School Law, examines information collected from 76 charter schools that were open during the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 school years. This fall, 15 new charter schools opened.
