46-33 2nd in West
FIRST-HALF SURPRISES: 2B Adam Kennedy's future with the team appeared uncertain after the emergence last season of SS David Eckstein, a natural second baseman. But Kennedy's improvements are making it hard to keep him out of the lineup. Kennedy hit .239 in April, .321 in May and .346 in June (through the 29th). Defensively, he is quicker turning the double play, and the team has been at or near the top of the league in double plays all season.... 1B Scott Spiezio has been exceptional on defense and offense. His 39 RBIs put him on a pace for 80--not bad for a No. 7 hitter.
WHO MUST STEP UP: RHP Aaron Sele, who was signed to bolster the rotation and provide leadership, has been a disappointment, going 7-5 with a 5.03 ERA. Sele initially had trouble getting in sync with C Bengie Molina and also has been battling problems with his mechanics and arm slot. RHP Kevin Appier needs to be more consistent. In his first nine starts, he went 5-1 with a 2.96 ERA. But he lost his next five while trying to emerge from a mechanical funk.
NEXT MOVES: The team had been looking for relief help, particularly a lefthander, so it sent lefty starter Scott Schoeneweis to the bullpen. But because setup man Al Levine has been bothered by a sore shoulder most of the season, it will continue to look for help. Blue Jays RHP Kelvim Escobar is a possibility.... Offensively, the team needs righthanded pop off the bench, and it should get it when 1B/DH Shawn Wooten returns after the All-Star break. After hitting .312 last year, he has missed the entire season with injuries.--Joe Haakenson
