This is extremely lightweight material derived from several operas by Jules Massenet (1842-1912). Most of the music is forgettable but pleasant enough while listening to it. Massenet's style is reminiscent of the latter impressionists in many instances, yet it also draws on Beethoven, especially in the Pastorale from the Suite No. 1.

In fact, it's the Suite No. I that is probably most controversial here, a program note telling us that in its time it was not well received. Understandably, there are not many memorable or probing themes present in any of the music, as I've ...
