Modern offenses have become so sophisticated, the threat of blitz or man-to-man coverage is no big deal. Enter the cover 2.
It's simply a zone cover that requires four rush men. In a 4-3 defense, the four down linemen rush the passer; in a 3-4, three linemen and a selected linebacker apply the heat. The beauty of this coverage is that three 'backers and the two comers cover five of the six underneath zones. The comers are responsible for the fiats; the three 'backers patrol the two hook and curl zones.
The word zone implies ball reaction, so these underneath defenders react to the ball when thrown. The safeties are the two deep defenders, each responsible for one haft of the field. Because of that, some genius with a phys-ed degree once deducted it would be smart to call this scheme "two deep."
