Cue the organ: Ba-da-da-da da-da--CHARGE! The rookies are here. The September call-ups breathe new life into the game of baseball. A hustling rookie can pump up tired vets and provide the missing piece to the stretch-run puzzle. For teams not in the postseason race, these players are thrown into the fire to give fans a glimpse of the future. Many call-ups simply gaze at the bright lights or get a cup of iced mochachino, and others stay sharp for the elite Arizona Fall League. Nevertheless, here are five guys who might be worthy additions to a desperate fantasy squad:
Hank Blalock, 3B, Rangers. This erstwhile Rookie of the Year candidate is ready to return, having shown better plate discipline and a .299 average with Class AAA Oklahoma.
Sean Burroughs, 3B/2B, Padres. He found his stroke at Class AAA Portland; be is learning to play second.
Victor Martinez, Indians. Martinez, a rare switch-hitting catcher, batted .339 with 22 homers and 85 RBIs, along with a respectable 57-62 BB/K ratio, at Class AA Akron.
Brandon Phillips, SS/2B, Indians. Phillips, a key part of the Bartolo Colon trade, is the Tribe's future shortstop but temporarily has moved to second base, ...
