If you never have heard of Wellington Mara, here's what you should know about him: Without Mara, the NFL that now dominates the American sports scene likely never would have developed.
In pre-revenue-sharing days, Mara--who died last week at 89 of cancer of the lymph nodes--controlled the NFL's most financially powerful franchise. His Giants had a television contract, one of the few teams to have that kind of revenue.
But then-commissioner Pete Rozelle was convinced that unless all teams shared all revenues, including those from TV, the league would continue to divide into haves and have-nots. His concept had no hope of being approved unless big-market owners such as Mara agreed. Mara had the foresight to do so, and Rozelle's idea took root.
