Stamping out bird flu at an early stage is necessary to prevent the virus from mutating into a form that can easily spread between humans and is essential to delay a human pandemic, animal health experts said Tuesday.

"We must wage a war on this scourge," said Bernard Vallat, head of the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health.

Experts agree an eventual global flu outbreak capable of killing millions of people is a certainty. What is also certain, say scientists, is that the virus will come from bird flu.

What is unknown is whether the H5N1 bird strain that has ravaged…
