New Zealand's government pledged Tuesday to fast track its election pledges to aid lower-income families and students as it laid out its legislative priorities at the formal opening of Parliament.
Labour Finance Minister Michael Cullen said hundreds of thousands of citizens will benefit from government moves to expand state help to working families and make student study loans interest free.
The new legislation will be rushed though Parliament to take effect when the tax year begins next April 1, he said.
Cullen said extensions to the existing state-support package for lower-income families with working parents would add an average of 50 New Zealand dollars (US$34; A29) a week to the incomes of 160,000 families.
The Labour-led government of Prime Minister Helen Clark, supported by four minor parties, formed its third consecutive administration following the closely contested Sept. 17 elections.
