(BNamericas.com) - Argentine rail firm Trenes de Buenos Aires (TBA) owes 236mn pesos (US$79.3mn) to 750 creditors and is facing 644 lawsuits, 61 of which are bankruptcy requests, newspaper Cronista reported.
National deputies Margarita Stolbizer (UCR) and Marina Cassese (PJ) want to question transport minister Ricardo Jaime in congress on the problems with TBA because "the public is tired of this service functioning poorly for some time," the legislators were quoted as saying by radio station Cadena 3.
The deputies want Jaime to tell the lower chamber about the "economic, technical and financial situation" of the company and give an evaluation of the service it provides on the former Sarmiento rail line in the west of the capital.
Stolbizer and Cassese also want Jaime to report on whether the cancellation of the concession contract is being studied due to the failings of TBA.
Just last week, disgruntled passengers destroyed two TBA trains in Haedo station in Buenos Aires after their service was canceled while they were on board.
