Not so long ago, New York schoolgirls lazed about in a toy store called Penny Whistle at Ninety-second Street and Madison Avenue. In checked pinafores or plaid pleats, they sat reading and coloring as their mothers shopped for the perfect gift. Penny Whistle eventually closed its doors, the schoolgirls inevitably grew up, but the need for the perfect gift remains. That's where actress Phoebe Cates Kline and business partner Lisa Matlin come in. "We grew tired of going downtown to find that amazing birthday present," says Matlin, a die-hard Upper East Sider.
