On August 12, 1986, in Harrisville, New Hampshire, at a reception in his honor given by Mary and Robert Raley, Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) exclaimed, "My dears, you have a witty house!" The renowned composer and critic was in a jovial humor, having just heard his first and second symphonies well played at a concert in the Congregational Church nearby, and his appraisal of the Raleys' house, if whimsical, was perceptive (see Pls. I, II). The brick house with frame additions at both ends was built in the mid-1830s, and the present owners' felicitous blending of the antique with the contemporary is a testament to their discrimination, imagination, and, yes, wit.
