The salon in eighteenth-century Paris functioned as a gathering place for reading literature, engaging in conversation, and indulging in diversions such as music. The architecture and decoration of these rooms were intended to make them conductive to such refined pursuits. The grand salon from the Hotel Gaillard de La Bouexiere is a distinguished survival of eighteenth-century French interior design.
