On March 16, a reporter asked Marlins manager John Boles if he was "gravely" concerned about the sorry performance of projected No. 5 starter Jesus Sanchez.

"No, I'm grayly concerned," Boles replied. "And getting grayer by the minute."

Six days later, a reporter asked Boles, "Where does your rotation stand?"

"It's not standing," he responded, deadpan.

Little did Boles know that two days later, he would be proved correct.

Projected No. 2 starter Chuck Smith tripped and fell across home plate, spraining his right shoulder--his pitching shoulder--and sending the Marlins' rotation into further disarray.

Smith will miss his first start and possibly three weeks. Projected No. 4 starter A.J. Burnett is out until May with a foot injury.
