Swedish surgeons successfully transplanted the lung of a man whose heart had stopped beating into a woman dying of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While the technique has the potential for greatly expanding the supply of donor lungs, it also raises ethical questions about the acceptability of organs from non-heart-beating donors.
The donor died of acute myocardial infarction in the coronary intensive care unit of University Hospital of Lund after failed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
