TAIPEI, April 2 Asia Pulse - Representatives from the world's leading bicycle producing countries vowed Sunday in Taipei to bolster global environmental protection while seeking business prosperity for themselves.
More than 200 bicycle industry leaders from Canada, Italy, Japan, the United States and Taiwan got together at the Taipei International Convention Center Sunday for the Global Bicycle Summit to discuss issues concerning bicycle development trends, marketing strategies, the various regulations of different countries, and the growing global popularity of electric bikes.
In a joint statement, the bicycle leaders vowed to promote the use and production of environmentally-friendly electric bikes and to protect the globe from industrial pollution, especially that of transportation vehicles.
Expressing support for Taiwan bicycle industry's determination to promote electric bikes, Lin Tah-hsiung, Taiwan's deputy environmental protection administrator, announced during the summit that for Taiwanese users of electric bikes, the Environmental Protection Administration will offer a subsidy of NT$3,000 (US$92) for each unit purchase so as to prop up islandwide sales of the relatively new product.
Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou concretely supported the use of electric bikes by riding one personally at the event.
