TAIPEI, April 2 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's CD-R manufacturers took concerted action Sunday to protest against what they say are the overly high fees charged by Philips Electronics Inc. for the use of its patented technology in their production of CD-Rs.
The manufacturers said the exorbitant fees have sharply increased their production costs and weakened their products' market competitiveness.
Ritek Corp., one of Taiwan's major CD-R manufacturers, said that when the selling price of CD-R was US$3-4 a piece, Philips charged each Taiwan CD-R manufacturer 300 Japanese yen (US$2.72) per piece.
