ADELAIDE, April 2 Asia Pulse - The Adelaide car manufacturer Mitsubishi has won a $A225 million ($US108.79 million) contract to supply an additional 5,500 cars to the United States.
The deal, secured over the weekend, was in addition to the 12,000 vehicles already heading to the US this year.
The company said today it had worked hard over recent months to secure more export orders and the recent fall in the Australian dollar had helped make its products more price competitive.
The contract was good news for the company which has been plagued by persistent doubts over its long-term future as a car manufacturer.
It also came after a strong show of support last week for the Adelaide facilities from the vice president of international car operations, Steve Torok who said Mitsubishi had no plans to close the Australian factories.
"We believe the Australian market has a bright future and accordingly it is our desire to maintain a full range of operations in Australia, including manufacturing," Mr Torok said in the statement.
