About half the public told Harris interviewers last summer that they knew the Pentagon was developing a missile defense system; 48 percent did not. Fully 58 percent believe we already have such a system in place. Given low levels of information and knowledge about missile defense, responses to pollsters' questions about such a system need to be interpreted carefully. The data suggest that Americans generally favor building a missile shield, even when told about objections some have raised.
