Coast Guard Officer Skip Turner stares out of Longboat Pass and into an 8-foot swell in the Gulf of Mexico.

"It's bumpin' out there," he says with a grin. "No doubt about that."

Most boat operators would not dare go into such rough seas. But with the Coast Guard's new 27-foot, SAFE rescue boat, Turner welcomes the challenge. It's a chance to test the latest addition to the Cortez station's fleet.

He hits the gas and guns the boat into the green waters. The boat gets thrown around as if it were a rag doll, bouncing off one wave after the next as sea water splashes across its decks.
