The profiles on the following pages provide an overview of the cars, minivans, sport-utility vehicles, and pickup trucks for the 2001 model year as well as some 2002 models that will be available midyear. Most of our comments are based on a recent road test--if not of the '01 model itself, then of an earlier model provided it hasn't since changed. "Twins" and "triplets" are noted throughout. These are virtually the same model, sold under different nameplates.

THE "RECOMMENDED" SYMBOL

* A model earns a "recommended" label when it performs well in our tests and when our reader-survey data indicate that reliability should be at least average.

* A new or redesigned model is called "promising" if it tests well and, based on the reliability data for other models by that manufacturer, is likely to demonstrate at least average reliability over the coming year.

* If a model has no designation, it wasn't tested recently, didn't test well, has a below-average reliability record, or is too new to have reliability data.

INTERPRETING THE NEW-MODEL INFO
