CONSUMER REPORTS forecasts the reliability of new models based on data we collect each year from extensive surveys of our subscribers. The graphs on these two pages reflect the latest findings. The Ratings along the bottom of each chart correspond with the "Forecasts" section of the Profiles, starting on page 32.
In general, vehicles today are more reliable than in years past. The majority of the most-reliable models are from Japanese and European manufacturers, though there are now more American models in the top range. Increasingly, the quality gap between vehicles with foreign nameplates and those with domestic nameplates has been shrinking. Several "foreign" vehicles are actually built in North America.
Over the past two decades, reliability has greatly improved. Turn to page 12 for our look at the 20-year trends in automobile reliability.
