In a special ceremony here, the Fannie Mae Foundation distributed over $6 million to 205 nonprofits that provide services to the homeless in the greater Washington area and announced four winners of its "Good Neighbor" award.
Raised through Fannie's help the homeless walkathon campaign organized last fall, the fund represents the largest amount ever raised in the 13-year history of the walkathon. Participants, besides over 60,000 walkers of whom 30,000 were youth, included 279 business sponsors.
"If we continue to provide the nonprofit community with the support and tools they need," president and CEO Stacey H. Davis said, "we can make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands in the Washington area."
Since 1988 when Help the Homeless campaign began, approximately $22 million has distributed to 220 nonprofit agencies in the area. These agencies benefit nearly 30,000 people annually, half of them women and children, while 60-70% of the homeless adults served have special needs related to mental health and drugs.
