About 800 Lakewood Ranch High School students stayed home Friday after hearing conflicting, unsupported rumors about school violence.

Some had permission from parents to stay home; others made the decision themselves after talking to friends. Close to 2,000 students attend the east Manatee County school.

Only eight of the 100 students scheduled to make up the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test came to class Friday.
