With some regularity, institutions find it necessary to renovate their building so that they can better preserve and exhibit their permanent collections. Sometimes these renovations mandate closing the doors to the public for a specified period. A felicitous result of this unfortunate necessity is that objects from the collection are often assembled in traveling exhibitions. Such is the case with the extraordinary collection of the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana, located outside Geneva in the village of Cologny A selection of 168 of the more important objects amassed by Martin Bodmer (1899-1971) with a few recent accessions, have been assembled into an exhibition entitled Mirror of the World: Monuments of World Literature from the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana, which is on view until April 28 at the Grolier Club in New York City.
