After only two years of operation, Charlotte County's only charter school is $1.3 million in debt, and the School Board is considering shutting it down.
Citing out-of-control debt and persistent concerns about academic standards, the School Board was prepared to vote Tuesday evening on closing The Alpha Center. But Superintendent Max Schmidt postponed the vote, saying the board may have some legal issues to consider.
Nearly 15 Alpha Center parents and faculty spoke in support of the school at Tuesday's School Board meeting, many of them getting choked up as they addressed the board. Sympathetic audience members shouted out "amen" and "thank you" during some of the short speeches.
