My wife and I are news junkies. We read newspapers, watch network news shows every day, and tune in to CNN and SNN to keep up with events nationally and locally.

Like other journalists, I consider keeping up with news to be part of my job. My wife considers being informed an act of good citizenship. (We also read "Mary Worth," but that's another story.)

Our news jones is a stark contrast to our friend, who avoids news as if it were some communicable disease. Her outlook makes for some interesting encounters when she travels from her home in the Midwest to visit us in Florida.

Even so, I was stunned at her behavior …
