M2 PRESSWIRE-4 May 2001-UK Government: GBP10 million for child road safety lessons (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:04052001
The Government is to spend GBP10 million piloting a network of road safety schemes for children in deprived areas.
Local authorities in England are today being invited to bid for cash to run extra child pedestrian training projects, with priority being given to poorer areas as research shows they experience higher than average numbers of road casualties.
Depending on the number and size of schools that agree to take part, around 200,000 more children could be trained over the next five years.
The project is the latest in a series of Government initiatives set up to improve child road safety since the launch of the Road Safety Strategy in March 2000, which aims to reduce the number of children killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads by 50 per cent by the year 2010. This is part of an overall target to reduce all road deaths and serious injuries by 40 per cent compared with the average for 1994 to 1998.
Commenting on today's announcement, Road Safety Minister Lord Whitty said: "I am delighted that these schemes will give more children the skills they need to cope with traffic more safely.
