TOKYO, May 1 Asia Pulse - Five major electrical machinery manufacturers all chalked up stronger group operating profits in the term ended March 31, on robust sales of personal computers/cell phones and favorable microchip prices.
Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501), Toshiba Corp. (TSE:6502), Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (TSE:6503), Sony Corp. (TSE:6758) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (TSE:6752) released their fiscal 2000 earnings reports on Friday.
For the current year through March 2002, the firms appear likely to post declines in operating profits, due to slower demand for semiconductors and liquid crystal displays; except for Sony, which can count on better earnings from its game-console business, industry observers say.
For fiscal 2000, Sony chalked up rises in both sales and operating profit, the first time since fiscal 1997, thanks to favorable performances in the PC and electronics divisions.
