TAIPEI, May 1 Asia Pulse - Two leading domestic labor and trade union groups are scheduled to launch the largest-ever Labor Day rally in Taiwan today, taking the plight of local workers to the streets, labor sources said Monday.
More than 10,000 blue-collar workers are expected to join the Labor Day rally to transmit their view that "laborers need a chance to survive and all sectors in society should have equal opportunities," said Huang Ching-hsien, chairman of the Taiwan Confederation of Trade Unions, the sponsor of today's rally.
According to Huang, the demonstrations will highlight such issues as accelerating the privatization of state-run enterprises, allowing blue-collar workers the opportunity to be elected to the board of directors of state-run enterprises, and demanding that the Council of Labor Affairs be made to give a clear explanation of the government's shortened workweek policy.
The demonstrators will also approach the Ministry of Education, asking the government to grant subsidies to children of unemployed workers on the same standards that it now grants subsidies to children of teachers, military personnel and public functionaries.
Members of the Bank Employees' Confederation will appeal to the Ministry of Finance for an explicit guarantee of their work rights after several government-guided mergers take effect, according to Huang.
