TAIPEI, May 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan Premier Chang Chun-hsiung said Monday that the government will take effective steps to increase local work opportunities.

He made the remarks at a ceremony held under the sponsorship of the Council of Labor Affairs to commend model workers.

Chang attributed the recent sharp rise in Taiwan's jobless rate to economic stagnation, the shortening of the work-week, the exodus of manufacturing firms and a decline in production.
