PAKISTAN PRIVATIZATION PLAN FAILS TO ATTRACT INVESTORS.
KARACHI, May 1 Asia Pulse - A privatization programme unveiled in August last year has failed to attract investors and its success has remained confined to two small transactions.
And the latest schedule has assigned a ten-month period (September-June 2002) as the expected peak for major privatization.
Officials hope that the investment environment would improve once the IMF approves $2-3 billion Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF) by September this year. If the facility is approved, it would help improve the balance of payments position, ease debt burden and improve forex reserves. The Privatization Commission (PC) anticipated sale of 49 units for $4 billion over two years. The short-term plan envisaged privatization of nine units by December 2000.
