SYDNEY, May 1 Asia Pulse - A conference focusing on trade relations between Australia and Japan wound up in Sydney today, delivering recommendations on economic, regional security and cultural issues to improve ties.
It follows reports by both governments at the weekend that relations between the two nations had been neglected.
While participants denied that the bilateral relationship was in crisis, they acknowledged that work was needed to improve future trade.
"I have renewed my belief that Australia and Japan are indispensable partners, not only in business but also in political and security issues and social and cultural matters," said Minoru Murofushi, spokesperson for Japanese participants.
"At the core of what we're about of the last couple of days is how can we both get more out of this very good relationship that we have," said Jerry Ellis, the chairman of the Australia Japan Foundation.
Australia needed to counteract perceptions about the range of good and services it had on offer.
"What we would like to see is a broadening of the trade agenda and we believe that can develop particularly in some of the newer technology, but maybe more creatively through the new sciences, the life sciences," said Mr Ellis.
