The most notable developments we've seen in microwave ovens recently have been in the areas of design and convenience. For this Update, we tested 14 new models. Two of them--the Sharp R-630D and R-610D--have an unusual look, with controls set along the top of the door rather than on a side panel.
That configuration not only gives them a sleek appearance, it also allows them to hold a big, 16-inch turntable in a 19 1/2-inch-wide cabinet. That's nearly 5 inches narrower than some other models with a comparable-size turntable. While neither Sharp was a bargain (the R-630D cost $180; the R-610D was $170), the space savings they offer might be of value.
Both of those Sharps performed very well, though the sensor-equipped R-630D outscored the nonsensor R-610D. A sensor is designed to shut the oven off when it judges that the food is hot enough. Generally, we've found a sensor to be a helpful (if not perfect) feature. All the tested models have one except for the Sharp R-610D; the GoldStar MA-2117, MV-1715, and MV-1525; and the Emerson MW8168 and MW8102. Among the compacts, only the GE Profile JEM31 has a sensor.
Two other new Sharp large countertop models also stand out for their looks and ease of use. The Sharp R-440D, $145, and the bigger R-540D, $160, have a fairly large LCD touch screen that displays options and instructions, including 24 recipes. Both earned Excellent scores. The Ratings chart below shows how all the new models compare with previously tested ovens.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The performance of the new models has not changed our buying advice for microwave ovens. Since most of the ovens we've tested have been Very Good or Excellent, buy by size, features, and price. We also recommend buying a model with a sensor; the added convenience is worth the small increase in price.
Large ovens. The Panasonic NN-S960, $160, did best and is roomy. The Sharp R-440D, $145, and the Sharp R-540D, $160, also earned Excellent scores. While not especially roomy, the GoldStar MA-1302S, $130, offers fine performance and value.
